摘要
Background Many studies recommend lifestyle modification consisting of exercise and caloric restriction for treatment and prevention of the metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this study was to review the evidence that considers lifestyle modification as a management for the metabolic syndrome. Methods A literature search used ACP Journal club, Cochrane, Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect, MD consult by key words “lifestyle” and “metabolic syndrome”. Review these searched data (updated to May, 2011) thru meta-analysis and systemic review methods. Results The more physical activity levels and/or the less in caloric intake was associated with improvement in glucose metabolism (fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity), dyslipidemia (HDL cholesterol and triglycerides), abdominal obesity (waist circumference and visceral fat), and blood pressure. The moderate-intensity exercise for 30 to 60 minutes on most days of the week and/or a moderate reduction in caloric intake (approximately 500 kcal) will result in momentous improvements of the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions Whether gender, age, and race influence the improvements seen in the components of the metabolic syndrome with lifestyle modification remains unclear. Even the efficacy of exercise and/or caloric restriction in the treatment of the metabolic syndrome was evident, promotion of such lifestyle changes in this environment remains a challenge.
