Association between body mass index and the effect of antihypertensive treatment on the long-term outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke

Methods: This is a retrospective study of 501 patients who underwent CT scan of the Brain and Carotid Ultrasound for various symptoms like memory loss, TIA, headache, loss of balance, dizzy spells, double vision, and slurred speech. Data obtained from 2010 to 2014. Results: TOTAL PATIENTS WITH CT BRAIN SCAN 1⁄4 501 TOTAL PATIENTS WITH CSVD ON CT BRAIN SCAN 1⁄4 201/501 (40%) PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDY POPULATION AGE Over 50 392/501 (78%) Under 50 109/501 (22%) SEX Male 186/501 (37%) Female 315/501 (63%) HYPERTENSION 287/501 (57%) DIABETES (TYPE II) 118/501 (24%) HYPERLIPIDEMIA 272/501 (54%) BMI Over 30 (Obese) 144/501 (29%) Under 30 (Non-Obese) 357/501 (71%) PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS WITH CVSD AGE Over 50 196/201 (98%) Under 50 5/201 (2%) SEX Male 93/201 (46%) Female 107/201 (54%) HYPERTENSION 140/201 (70%) DIABETES (TYPE II) 66/201 (33%) HYPERLIPIDEMIA 72/201 (36%) MILD NON-OBSTURCTIVE CAROTID DISEASE 72/201 (36%) BMI Over30 (Obese) 40/201 (20%) Under 30 (Non-Obese) 161/201 (80%) Conclusion: Given the above data, we conclude that 40% of the study population has Cerebral Small Vessel Disease. 70% of the patients with CSVD have hypertension, 33% had Type II Diabetes, 36% have hyperlipidemia, 36% have mild carotid disease, and 98% of the patients are above the age 50.
