Structural crashworthiness systematic evaluation and improvement of a minibus

A minibus finite element (FE) model was established, and 100% full frontal impact FE simulation was performed. The corresponding impact test was conducted to verify the accuracy of the FE model. According to the crashworthiness systematic evaluation indicators, the original performance of the minibus was evaluated. Aiming at improving the structural crashworthiness performance, the step by step energy absorption stiffening plate and grooved rail were suggested. The crashworthiness of the modified minibus was improved with the peak acceleration reduced by 41.6%, the mean acceleration reduced by 6.3%, and the mean square root acceleration reduced by 22.5%, simultaneously, the passengers' living space was guaranteed. The efficiency of the presented method has been demonstrated in the process of the minibus improvement for an automobile company.
