The author analyzes Peter C. Gronn's earlier criticisms of structured observation in the EAQ and the communications whichfollowed concerning the merits and limitations of this research method. These criticisms are explained as growing from a limited conception of administration and an overzealous promotion of the research technique termed "Boswelling." Observational studies are offered as one of a number of research methods which expand the variety of tools available for researchers in educational administration.
