Technology Design for Connecting Student Notes to Online Course Content

The goal of this project is to provide students with a useful system for automatically connecting their personal class notes to online course content. This content is comprised of over 1000 components including: homework with and without solutions, worked example problems, animations, tutorials, demos, course notes, past exams, lecture slides, and captured lecture videos. We pre- sent the results of our initial investigation into how students handle information objects as well as information gathered from students on how they use their notes, available online course content, and their perceptions of possible tech- nologies. We developed and considered five initial prototypes. After review, a final prototype was developed and evaluated by focus groups and a deployment study. We discuss the final design, identified challenges, and the future of the work.
