Proceedings of the 2011 Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing

We welcome you to the first International Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing (HIP'11), held in conjunction with ICDAR 2011. Recent years have seen an increased effort to scan, index and provide access to historical documents held in archives and special collections that are often inaccessible to the world in general. ICDAR 2009 featured both a half-day tutorial and single a technical paper session dedicated to historical document processing. We recognize the contributions of those who have organized and participated in venues such as these that have laid the groundwork for a separate workshop focused on imaging, collection, and processing of historical documents. As the workshop organizers, we were very pleased with both the quality and quantity of submissions. The 35 papers submitted represented six of seven continents (no submissions from Antarctica !). This is certainly a strong indication of the worldwide interest in this topic. While we were able to accept 25 papers, we regret that we were not able to accept some good papers due to constraints of time and focus on historical documents.
