Comparison of Wireless Sensor Node Localisation Between Trilateration and Multi-Lateration Methods Using RSSI

Localisation of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices are important for several applications like asset tracking. I n this research, the wireless sensor transmitter position can be calculated using the algorithm methodology. In this work, the wireless sensor node transmitter (Tx) location based on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) was investigated using the trilateration and multilateration techniques. Both techniques demonstrated using the LoRA sensor nodes at the frequency of 868 MHz. The transmitted node was placed outdoor at 32 different coordinates points within the area of 10x10 meters. The transmitted node then sent a signal for every 5 s to three and four receivers for the trilateration and multilateration, respectively. The results showed that the trilateration and multilateration techniques can estimate the Tx node's position. The multilateration achieved a low overall average of localisation errors, which is 1.83 m whilst that the trilateration is 2.30 m.
