Incremental Quantities Based Permissive Overreaching Transfer Trip Scheme for Protecting Inverter-Based Renewable Resources

Protecting inverter-based resources (IBRs) presents a considerable challenge due to their low fault current. This paper introduces an innovative protection scheme designed to enhance the security of inverter-based resources. Leveraging the incremental characteristics of voltage and current, we propose a novel Permissive Overreaching Transfer Trip scheme (POTT). This scheme demonstrates a remarkable ability to detect internal faults, even in scenarios where the change in line current is marginal. Beyond its heightened sensitivity, the proposed protection approach ensures great security during external faults and normal transient conditions. Extensive testing has substantiated the efficacy of the incremental quantity-based POTT scheme in safeguarding IBRs within power systems.
