Comparative Evaluation of Low-Level Laser Therapy with Fluoride Varnish and Desensitizing Tooth Paste in the Treatment of Dentinal Hypersensitivity: A Randomized Control Trial

Context: Dentinal hypersensitivity has been considered "an enigma" since it is often experienced but poorly comprehended and interpreted. Dentinal hypersensitivity has been viewed as a genuine public health issue, particularly since it can have repercussions on the patient's lifestyle. Aims: In the present study, a randomized control trial was performed to compare the effect of low-level laser therapy with fluoride varnish and desensitizing toothpaste in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity. Methods and Material: Total of 80 individuals with dentinal hypersensitivity were included in the study and were divided into two groups: a Control group that received sodium fluoride desensitizing toothpaste and a Case group that received fluoride varnish along with low-level laser therapy. Statistical Analysis Used: The data was recorded in Microsoft Excel 2016 and analyzed using IB SPSS Version 25. Over the period of time, comparison was made using paired t-test statistics. P value was kept at <0.05. Results: The Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale (SCASS) score was significantly lower in the first week, second week, first month, and sixth month in the test group than in the positive control group. Mean score for Group 1 was 2.43 +/- 0.501 and for Group 2 was 2.35 +/- 0.483. At 6 months the mean score for Group 1 was 1.10 +/- 0.591 and for Group 2 was 1.73 +/- 0.751. Comparison of the mean score contrasts between the groups showed no statistically significant difference at baseline. Conclusions: It concludes that low-level laser therapy with fluoride varnish was more viable in diminishing the sensitivity than desensitizing toothpaste.
