Impulsive Noise Mitigation in NOMA-OFDM Systems Using Time-Domain Interleaving for Smart Grid Applications

Advanced and efficient communication techniques play a crucial role in modern smart grid technology. However, smart grid communication systems are prone to both multipath fading and impulsive noise (IN) impairments. This paper presents time-domain interleaving (TDI) aided mitigation of an IN in a hybrid system that uses non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques over Rayleigh block-fading multipath channel. Semi-analytical bit error rate (BER) expressions are derived using TDI in the presence of IN for two and three downlink user scenarios using the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and zero-forcing (ZF) equalizers. Computer simulations are used to verify the semi-analytical expressions derived. The simulation results show that using TDI significantly mitigates the performance degradation in the BER of NOMA-OFDM systems impaired by both IN and multipath fading effects.
