Smart materials and devices tend to be highly complex and integrative with diverse components. How can components be simplified without losing multifunctionality? Recently in Cell Reports Physical Science, Shiwu Zhang et al. demonstrated a single-material liquid metal to realize dual pump/valve functions by designing functionally cooperating systems.
