Anti-corrosion applications of 2D transition metal based layered materials

Metal corrosion causes great economic losses, wastes resources, pollutes the environment and damages personal safety. With the birth of the two-dimensional (2D) material graphene, there has been an upsurge in research on two-dimensional materials. Because of their excellent physical and chemical properties, two-dimensional materials have great application potential and prospects in the field of metal corrosion protection. Two-dimensional transition metal layered materials including layered double hydroxides (LDHs), transition metal carbonitrides (MXenes) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have also received extensive attention. This article briefly introduces the above three two-dimensional transition metal layered materials. The current application status of LDHs, TMDs and MXenes in the field of metal anti-corrosion is focused on. Some studies that can be carried out in the future with the two-dimensional transition metal layered materials in corrosion prevention are proposed. Due to the excellent properties, 2D transition metal layered materials have been thoroughly investigated for anti-corrosion. This article briefly reviews the structures and synthetic methods of 2D transition metal layered materials, and their recent applications in metal corrosion prevention.
