Improving the Performance of a 60 GHz Planar Phased Array Using High-Impedance Surface

A 60 GHz wide-angle scanning (2×4) planar phased array based on mushroom-type high-impedance surface (HIS) is proposed. The periodic HIS is applied to broaden beam scanning angle of the planar phased array in xoz-plane which only has two antenna units. The main beam of the designed planar phased array can be scanned to ± 60° in the xoz-plane, compared to only scanning ± 43° in xoz-plane without HIS. Finally, the proposed planar phased array antenna can achieve ± 60° beam scanning range in both xoz- and yoz- planes operating at 60 GHz.
