摘要
Abstract Summary Physiotherapy in the intensive care unit integrates both respiratory treatments and physical rehabilitation in the management of critically ill patients depending on individual patient assessment and clinical need. Respiratory techniques aim to enhance airway secretion clearance, optimize lung volume and improve oxygenation, reduce airway resistance and work of breathing, and minimize respiratory complications. Physical rehabilitation strategies target the effects of intensive-care-unit-acquired weakness and resulting physical and functional disability. Combining respiratory and physical rehabilitation skillsets, physiotherapists actively contribute to ventilator and tracheostomy weaning as well as holistic rehabilitation programmes for critically ill patients. Aspects of both respiratory and rehabilitation practice require further investigation to inform the evidence base.
