摘要
Microelectronics play a vital role in the next generation of Smart Cities (SCs), Smart Grids (SGs) and Industry 5.0 due to their provision of computing power, storage capacity, and connectivity required to sustain these intricate systems. Moreover, microelectronics are essential for advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things. In SCs, microelectronics find applications in various domains such as traffic management systems, smart lighting, water management systems, energy management systems, public safety systems, environmental monitoring systems, intelligent transportation systems, smart buildings, and smart homes. Similarly, in Industry 5.0, microelectronics are employed in industrial automation, robotics, additive manufacturing, process control, quality control, supply chain management, logistics, and predictive maintenance. Utilizing microelectronics in SCs, SGs and Industry 5.0 yields numerous benefits, including enhanced efficiency, increased sustainability, improved safety, and an elevated quality of life. Microelectronics aid in optimizing energy consumption, transportation, and manufacturing, thereby improving overall efficiency. Additionally, they contribute to reducing the environmental impact of cities and industries. Microelectronics also bolster public safety and security measures, while simultaneously elevating the quality of life across urban and industrial domains. Nevertheless, incorporating microelectronics into SCs, SGs and Industry 5.0 poses several challenges. Security stands out as a significant concern since microelectronic systems are susceptible to various threats, including cyberattacks, hardware Trojans, and physical attacks. Another challenge lies in achieving energy efficiency, as microelectronic systems often consume substantial power, posing complications in scenarios where energy resources are limited. Furthermore, scalability is of utmost importance for microelectronic systems to accommodate the growing number of devices and applications in SCs, SGs and Industry 5.0. This article aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the challenges, solutions, and opportunities associated with microelectronics in the future generation of SCs, SGs and Industry 5.0.
