Numerical Modeling and Analysis of the Binder Migration Behavior during the Dual-Layer Electrode Drying Process

The electrode structure is of great importance to lithium-ion battery performance. Nevertheless, the electrode binder migration along the thickness direction during the drying process deteriorates the electrode performance. This study introduces a dual-layer electrode structure to enhance binder distribution uniformity. A numerical model is developed to investigate binder migration in the dual-layer electrode structure. The numerical results indicate that the binder distribution uniformity in the dual-layer electrode structure is superior to that in the traditional single-layer electrode structure. Moreover, the effects of the dual-layer electrode structure parameters, such as layer thickness, etc., are analyzed in detail. The initial binder distribution is the most important dual-layer electrode structure parameter that affects binder distribution uniformity. Finally, an optimal design of the dual-layer electrode structure parameters is conducted. The binder distribution uniformity of the optimal results increases by 84.5% compared to that of the traditional single-layer electrode structure.
