Hydro-Tower Pumped Storage-based Wind Power Generator: Short-term Dynamics and Controls

In this paper, a novel hydro-tower pumped storage-based wind power generator is proposed, and its dynamics and controls are developed and analyzed with time scale of seconds. For the hydro-tower pumped storage, the wind and water towers are combined as the upper reservoir, and the wells or nearest lake or sea with large volume capacity are used as the lower reservoir. Then, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) rotor side AC-DC-AC system is taken as the conversion system of the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM)-based hydraulic storage system. Correspondingly, dynamic modeling of the DFIG, PMSM, wind turbine, pump/turbine, voltage source converters (VSCs) is performed. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed storage integrated wind power generator has the advantages, including compact structure, relative low cost and dispatching characteristics. The dynamic simulation of the storage integrated wind power generator is performed via diverse studies, including different dispatching commands, and different wind speed profiles. The simulation results reveal that the proposed wind power generator is applicable when it is subjected to wind fluctuations, and grid command changes.
