LISP-MM: Efficient LISP-Based Mobility Management in Software Defined Vehicular Networks

An efficient mobility management scheme is the key to providing stable network services to vehicles. However, existing IP-address-based vehicle mobility management schemes face problems such as triangular routing, frequent configuration of IP addresses, and poor scalability. In this study, we design an intra/inter-domain mobility management scheme for vehicles based on the LISP protocol and software-defined network (SDN). A vehicle-occurring base-station handover in the same SDN domain is called an intra-domain handover. A vehicle-occurring base-station handover between different SDNs is called an inter-domain handover. To avoid the frequent configuration of IP addresses for fast-moving vehicles, the proposed scheme splits the IP addresses into Endpoint Identifier (EID) for vehicle identity and Routing Locator (RIOC) for vehicle location. Moreover, to reduce unnecessary routing update overheads, we design multipath data-transfer algorithms to construct default routes for inter-domain data transfer. Detailed theoretical models and comprehensive experiments show that the proposed scheme can provide stable network services for vehicles and outperform state-of-the-art schemes in terms of signaling cost, handover latency, and packet delivery cost.
