Silicon Core Fibers for Nonlinear Photonics: Applications and Emerging Trends

Over the past two decades silicon core fibers (SCF) have emerged as a promising platform for use in nonlinear photonic applications. By harnessing the unique optical properties of the crystalline silicon core directly within the fiber geometry, it is possible to imagine compact and low power nonlinear systems that are immediately compatible with existing fiber infrastructures. This paper reviews the recent advances in the development and application of SCFs for nonlinear optical processing and source generation. Particular focus will be placed on novel device designs that benefit from the fiber geometry and post-processing procedures that facilitate integration with existing components.
