Considerations for microgrid transient event simulation

With the large amount of resources and research invested in distributed generation, microgrids are an ideal vehicle to combine traditional generation (i.e. gas and diesel generation), renewable energy resources, and energy storage systems. Microgrids provide flexibility in solving energy demands and ancillary services at the cost of increased complexity during design and implementation. Thus, microgrid modelling is invaluable in ensuring system energy balance and transient stability during system disturbances. Although modelling is used throughout microgrid research, there is little documentation that assists with the creation of representative dynamic models. This paper aims to provide important considerations regarding microgrid component control and implementation, with an example of how these considerations are implemented to create a dynamic model that can accurately simulate transient behaviour to key system events. Modelling the dynamic events discussed in a representative manner will assist in ensuring that the system is designed to be robust when subjected to transient events.
