Laser ablation of SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites: Morphological characterization, component evolution and oxidation mechanisms

SiC/SiC composites play a pivotal role in aerospace and energy applications for their excellent resistance to high temperatures, corrosion, oxidation, and low density. This paper delves into the ablation behavior irradiated by a femtosecond laser, examining both qualitative and quantitative aspects through micro/nanostructure and component analysis. The findings reveal significant disparities in elements, compositions, and chemical states across the ablation zones, transition zones, and marginal zones. Moreover, a detailed discussion on the active and passive oxidation mechanisms in the ablation zone is presented. Notably, the oxidation product SiO2 acts as a barrier, impeding oxygen penetration into the material interior.
