To avoid the delivery of chaotic references carrying no data bits, a cross reference carrier index differential chaos shift keying modulation scheme with low cost is proposed. All subcarriers are divided into two groups and indexed individually. In each group, one data-bearing signal is sent via the subcarrier selected by carrier index modulation. Data bit recovery is realized according to the correlation between the two information signals. Without wasting any energy on transmitting the reference, the proposed system not only achieves better energy efficiency and low complexity but also reduces the number of required subcarriers. Theoretical bit error rate performance of the proposed system is analyzed over the AWGN and multipath Rayleigh fading channels, respectively. Besides, combinations of group sizes are optimized for best performances. Finally, relevant simulation results are given for verification and comparison.
