The Role of Hydrogen Energy in Future of the Power Systems: Study of Resource Adequacy in Finland.

Hydrogen, as an emerging energy carrier, is paving the way towards decarbonization of the future energy system. While moving towards carbon neutrality, electrification of different sectors such as transportation, heat, and industry including power to hydrogen (P2H) will increase on the consumption side, and variable renewable energy sources (VRES) such as wind and solar will replace the majority of the conventional power plants on the generation side. This dramatic change, which increases uncertainty in the power system, needs to be investigated in terms of future development for resource adequacy to address the extreme cases, where there is a chance of forced load disconnection. The contribution of this paper is to proposes a coupled hydrogen and electricity energy system (CHEES) and also study the role of hydrogen in providing flexibility to improve the resource adequacy of the power system.
