In situ synthesis of ZIF-8 on lignosulfonate functionalized polyethyleneimine/carboxymethyl chitosan hybrid aerogels for efficient tetracycline removal

•In situ growth ZIF-8 on a functionalized CCSL aerogel is explored for TC adsorption.•The addition of LS can increase the crosslinking density and further enhance the mechanical strength of aerogel.•The incorporation of PEI and LS endow the composite aerogel with superior mechanical properties and excellent adsorption capability.•The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of CCSL@ZIF-8 for TC increased with the addition of LS.•The absorbent exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity, excellent reusability and water stability.
