•Composite plates of AZ31B and 6061Al alloy with different thickness ratios were prepared by asymmetrical rolling with differential temperature rolls.•Differences in microstructural evolution of intermetallic compounds distribution, grain refinement and texture weakening of composite plates with different thickness ratios were investigated.•Influence laws of different thickness ratios on the coordinated deformation of Mg and Al layers were studied qualitatively and quantitatively.•Influence mechanism of different thickness ratios on interfacial regulation and mechanical properties of composite plate was elucidated.
