Investigating Plasmons in van der Waal heterostructures

The deposition of atomically thin layers materials through tailored nanofabrication has led to a huge interest in exploring intriguing physics at the nanoscale, in particular the interaction with light. However, these methods are prohibitively expensive and often hard to repeat. In this paper, we present a dyadic Green function approach to analyse the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that exist at the interfaces in van der Waal heterostructure materials. Our results in particular the enhanced propagation length of the SPPs show that the extraordinary physics of light matter interaction in van der Waal materials can be effectively analysed. We believe our method can become an integral part of plasmonic and photonic photodetection devices at terahertz and mid-infrared frequency regions.
