Novel Partially-Reflective-Surface (PRS) Design Using Compact Microstrip Resonant Cells (CMRCs) for Gain Enhancement

In this paper, a new design of a partially reflective surface (PRS) made of compact microstrip resonant cells (CMRC) is investigated to improve the antenna gain. The gain of the antenna integrated by PRS is strongly affected by the reflection properties of the PRS. A positive phase gradient of the reflection coefficient is required to increase the gain over a wide frequency range. In this work, double layers of CMRC unit cells are used to achieve the positive phase gradient in the frequency band of interest. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PRS design.
