“Cutting effect” of needles on the raindrop characteristics

•1. Cutting effect was quantified with various water drop falling heights and needle states.•2. Cutting effect markedly altered raindrop diameter, velocity, and thus energy.•3. Cutting effect was closely related to needle properties.•4. Reduction in raindrop energy was enhanced as raindrop falling height increased.
