•Upgraded marine biofuel from pyrolysis oil's heavy fraction by supercritical ethanol.•MgNiMo/SAPO-11 catalyst markedly improved bio-oil yield and quality.•Key parameters (325 °C, 4 h, 5 g catalyst) yield an impressive 63.20 % biofuel.•Achieved biofuel with a low 0.07O/C ratio and high heating value (39.65 MJ/kg).
