Enhancing Power Quality in Grid Integration of Wind Energy System Using UPFC-BESS

The demand for the generation of electricity is increasing in recent years and the trend is growing toward renewable energy generation. The intermittent nature of wind energy cause poor power quality, voltage sag/swell, harmonics in current and variations in voltage. Integrating wind energy into the grid may lead to a reduction in the performance of utilities and consumer equipment. It is important to carefully manage this transition to minimize any potential adverse impacts on the grid’s efficiency and the functionality of electrical devices used by consumers. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are used in order to improve the power qualities. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) with bettery energy storage system (BESS) is used as a FACTS device to improve power quality and is compared with Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), Static VAR Compensator (SVC). The effectiveness of the proposed scheme primarily relies on the appropriate supply of reactive power to meet the demands of both the load and the induction generator. Ensuring a proper balance of reactive power is crucial for the successful implementation of the scheme and its seamless integration into the electrical system. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that UPFC is better than STATCOM and SVC because of its stability, greater power factor and less harmonics distortion.
