Wireless Channel Customization using Direction- Of-Arrival Sensing Method and Reflective EM Skin

This paper proposes a cost-effective direction-of-arrival (DoA) measurement method at 28 GHz using a Rotman lens to address challenges in implementing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for enhancing wireless communication coverage. By diagnosing an environment and installing electromagnetic (EM) skins, it demonstrates how to create a customized wireless channel to efficiently improve wireless coverage. When comparing simulation and measurement results, a maximum S21 enhancement of 14.6 dB is observed in the simulation and an increase of 12.1 dB in received power is confirmed in the measurement similarly. Furthermore, the difference of the EM skin locations between the simulation and the measurement validates that the measurement is much more critical in understanding the propagation characteristics of the actual environment under realistic conditions.
