•Novel photocatalyst CeO2/ZnTCPP was synthesized by two-step solvothermal.•CeO2/ZnTCPP exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production performance.•The type-II heterojunction is favorable for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
