•A mineral wool-based mix design was used to verify its suitability for a 3D-print.•The mix design shows thermal stability up to 500 °C.•The mechanical strength of the moulded samples decreased at elevated temperatures.•The number and size of pores in the prepared samples increased with temperature.•Higher porosity in the 3D-printed samples reduced the thermal expansion.
