A new neolignan glycoside from the roots of Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Maxim and its chemotaxonomic significance

(7R,8S,7 ' E)-9 '-O-methyl-5-methoxydehydrodiconiferylalcohol-4-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), a novel neolignan glycoside, and twenty-six known compounds (2-27) were isolated and characterized from the roots of Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Maxim. Regarding the biogenic pathway, they both belong to the phenylpropanoids produced by the shikimate pathway. The structure of compound 1 was elucidated by the analysis of spectroscopic data obtaining from UV, IR, CD, HR-ESI-MS and 1D and 2D NMR experiments (NOESY, HMBC and HSQC). From the current study, compounds 1-4, 16-18 were newly isolated from the family Araliaceae, compounds 8, 13, 14 and 19 were newly isolated from the genus Eleutherococcus, and compound 15 was newly isolated from Eleutherococcus senticosus. Furthermore, an insightful discussion of the chemical classification of isolated compounds was presented.
