•PTSD may be underdiagnosed in the U.S. burn population.•Burn patients with PTSD are at increased risk for psychiatric morbidity.•PTSD diagnosis rate remains relatively constant in the burn population over the past 20 years.•PTSD in burns is increasingly treated with Serotonergic agents and prazosin over the past 20 years.•Screening for PTSD after burn injury may reduce morbidity and mortality in burn patients.
