•LDO/vinasse biochar composite was synthesized for phosphate recovery and reuse.•LDO@BC0.1 exhibits an ultra-high specific surface area of 508.97 m2/g.•LDO@BC0.1 displays excellent removal capacity for trace phosphate.•P-adsorbed LDO@BC can be used as fertilizer to accelerate plant growth.
