A Terahertz Pattern Reconfigurable Logarithmic Spiral Antenna With RF-MEMS Switches

In this letter, a pattern reconfigurable antenna with eight states is designed to realize the multi-beam steering function in terahertz communication system. The proposed antenna mainly consists of four width-graded logarithmic spiral antenna units and eight RF micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) cantilever beam switches. By selecting different input ports and RF MEMS switching configurations, the beam direction can be changed. The selection of the input port determines the azimuth angle of the beam, and the state of switches determines the vertical tilting angle. The HPBW of each main lobes at eight directions is more than 60°. The maximum gain of states 1–4 is 7 dB, states 5–8 is 5.1dB. States 1–4 are right-handed circular polarization and states 5–8 are linear polarization. The antenna operates at 335-348GHz, it can realize 90° steps in the azimuth plane, vertical tilting angle of 32° and 50°.
