•Fe/Mg phyllosilicates and mono- and polyhydrated Mg sulfates are detected in Mikumi crater.•Possible desiccation/hydraulic fracturing on crater floor.•Phyllosilicates are on top of the sulfate units, meaning that they formed later than sulfates.•Mikumi crater is a key area in Meridiani Planum to investigate Mars’ ancient climate.
