•Nanoflower MoS2/rGO composite was prepared by one-step hydrothermal.•It achieves highly sensitive and selective detection of dopamine.•It exhibits good anti-interference performance due to its abundant edge defects.•It has good practicability for detecting dopamine in white mouse and bovine serums.
