•A multi-phase FG microstructure was designed to obtain good fatigue property.•Microcracks were blunted and their length matched with microstructural scale.•Dislocation planar slip was transformed to wavy slip with increasing stress level.•Deformation twins and stacking faults were formed during cyclic deformation.•Fatigue crack propagation path was tortuous, which was deflected by precipitates.
