•Open insitu repair offered an improved long-term survival without added benefits in terms of complication rates for primary infected abdominal aortic aneurysm.•In infected AAA, endovascular repair should be considered as bridging stage between the urgent situation and eventual open repair.•Ultimately a combination of patient-related factors and bacterial cause of infection should dictate the best course of therapy for these complex patients.
