A Narrowband Independent-Speed Variable-Frequency Aviation Generator

The increasing need for electric power on future more electric aircraft is driving the evolution of the main aviation generators. Existing passenger-level aircraft are powered by constant-frequency integrated drive generators or wideband variable-frequency generators. They are subject to either low mechanical reliability or extra full-power-rated converters. Given this scenario, this work proposes a new aviation generator. The proposed generator takes advantage of a variable-pole doubly-fed induction generator. It can achieve a narrowband independent-speed variable-frequency power generation solution needed by the aviation industry. This generator concept is a feasible and competitive candidate for future more electric aircraft.
