Venous thromboembolism, chronic liver disease and anticoagulant choice: effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants versus warfarin

•Little data exist on anticoagulation in patients with venous thromboembolism and liver disease.•We sought to answer this important clinical question using data from routine clinical care.•The primary outcome was hospitalization for recurrent venous thromboembolism or major bleeding.•The risk of the primary outcome was lower with direct oral anticoagulants than with warfarin.
