A Picture is worth Thousand Words: from Camera Obscura to Corona Detection Microscopes

A famous Chinese proverb "A picture is worth thousand words" tells us as well, how important pictures are: the percentage of information about the world that a healthy person receives through the visual system is about 90 - 95%! If a Chinese proverb has to be matched with real pictures and amount of data that is captured, an image with 2 MPixel would hold about 1000 times more data than an average text with 1000 words. This paper gives a short overview of the evolution (and revolution) in image recording and processing, starting with the first trials in Camera obscura, up to nowadays microscopes and telescopes enabling us a revolutionary view into the smallest and remotest parts of the Materia and deep space.
