•Gd is uniformly distributed into BiVO4 crystal, while Au is selectively modified on the electron-rich (010) facets of BiVO4.•The doping of Gd at the Bi-site suppresses decomposition of produced H2O2.•Gd doping promotes photoelectron transfer by lowering the Schottky barrier.•Gd doping enhances photocatalytic H2O2 production of Au/BiVO4 through bifunctional influence.
