•50%KCl salt substitute would be well tolerated from a taste perspective in South Africa.•100%KCl did not rank highly for taste, over half reported being unlikely to use this.•Most participants were able to visually identify 100%NaCl and 100%KCl.•35%, 50% and 66%KCl were not visually distinguishable by the majority.
