The VSC Charging Method Considering the Lightning Strike Probability

Thunderstorms around the world have various effects on the power system, and in thunderstorms it is necessary to maintain the continuous operation of power grid devices and even the safe start process. For the widely used voltage source converters (VSC) in the power system, especially in their most vulnerable charging process, it is extremely dangerous. To ensure the safety of devices in thunderstorm weather, this study aims to propose a VSC charging method considering lightning strike probability. In this paper, according to the probability of lightning strikes under thunderstorm weather, the VSC charging requirements is studied, the corresponding current limiting resistor scheme is designed, and the corresponding charging method for lightning protection is designed. Finally, in the electromagnetic transient simulation software, the effectiveness of the proposed VSC charging method is verified.
