Cardiac injuries

Cardiac injuries are uncommon even in busy urban trauma centers. Most reported series in the literature are retrospective. This chapter presents data from the only three prospective series of cardiac injuries in the literature and describes techniques for their management. Mortality can be predicted and stratified to mechanism of injury, physiologic presentation on transport and arrival, and cardiac injury grading. This chapter also describes the surgical technique required for their management.
