Low-dimensional halide perovskites present several advantages over canonical, ABX3, three-dimensional perovskites. However, there are challenges that low-dimensional perovskites face, including environmental concerns, toxicity, stability, and charge transport issues, which need to be addressed before being implemented on a significant scale. This chapter will first discuss some of the current approaches adopted for solving these matters, such as orientational and compositional control of perovskite thin-films, passivation of surface defects, and lead replacement. Then, we will focus on the frontiers of these materials, like the implementation of functional organic cations, the development of new related families of perovskites, such as layered double perovskites, and how these investigations could take low-dimensional perovskites to reach their full potential in solar cells and light-emitting devices. Finally, we discuss the prospects for these materials, the latest approaches, and future applications such as spintronics, catalysts, ferroelectrics, and thermoelectrics.
