Faultlines in virtual teams

Despite the emergence of interest in virtual teams (VTs) and faultlines at around the same time, there is surprisingly little overlap in these two streams of literature. After a brief review of both the VT and faultlines research, we discuss the current state of research around their intersection. We then propose future research around three topics in the faultlines literature that have implications for VTs: explanatory mechanisms linking faultlines and VT effectiveness; team structural variables that potentially moderate the impact of faultlines on VT processes and outcomes; and longitudinal perspectives of faultlines that impact VTs. We conclude this chapter by providing guidance to leaders and team members on managing and weathering the challenges that faultlines pose in VTs through four main strategies: team structuring, building trust and communication norms, diversity training and identity play activities, and appropriate leadership.
